Copperplate classes are again scheduled through UC Riverside extension for three Saturdays, Jan 25, Feb 1& 8, 2014 from 10am to 4pm. We'll learn the basics, as well as flourishing and several variations which range from elegant to trendy. We'll work on a couple simple projects that will put these new skills to work.

For an image of the styles see my previous post:

Card for a Friend

My contributions to a group card - the cover and an inside page. I'm having such a good time with my daisy drawing that I'm using it for a variety of projects.
On the actual unscanned Blue Sky page, the clouds didn't look quite so ominous!

Favorite Hen Timer

July's ATC design: Sketched and watercolored my favorite hen timer, which had been a gift from my friend, Michele. The background is a copperplate practice sheet, with the word chicken  written in several different languages.

Copperplate Calligraphy offered by the University of California, Riverside Extension

The University of California, Riverside has scheduled an introductory class for Copperplate Calligraphy. Here's a link to a publicity flier, published by the southern California Society for Calligraphy:

Other calligraphy classes are planned for the fall and beyond, including a second session of Copperplate, as well as a session of Gothic.

Copperplate Collage

Artwork put together to promote the Intro to Copperplate class that I'm scheduled to teach for the University of California, Riverside extension. The class covers the basics, but variations will be shown and could be covered in a future class.

This is mostly old stuff. I'm working on some new samples--my formal copperplate is neater these days.

I've also been asked to teach a six-hour Orange County workshop on the "funky" lettering developed for my journals, as seen on the lower left. We're hoping to schedule for early spring, working around my other teaching commitments.

Proportionally-Challenged Contour Drawing

Ha! The proportions are WAY off on the quickly-drawn contour at the top.  The next day I tried a sketchier version.

Wobbly Silverware

Really fast sketch of my silverware, with a fun, wobbly look, backed by a grid inspired by a stained-glass divider in Marie Calendars.

On another day, taking a little more time with a carrot.

Fitting in some drawing practice

"Our pet" ground squirrel, Suzy, was being hounded by a Falcon, so she decided to move her babies to a safer place. Dennis heard squeaking and went out to investigate. A little later, the falcon was sitting next to her trail, so he went down to escort Suzy up the path. After that, I decided to sit and keep an eye out for her safety, passing the time by practicing my drawing. I picked up a camelia that had dropped from the bush next to my bench.
Suzy ended up moving seven (!) precious packages--we don't know if she had already moved some before we, and the falcon, took notice.
Later, I added a little color to the image. I need to take more of these sketch breaks!
